Linda Edna Cardellini (n e Lorraine (Hernan) was born to Wayne David Cardellini (a businessman) in Redwood City. Linda is of Italian origins (her paternal grandfather), Irish, German, English and Scottish (her mother). Linda was the youngest child of four living in San Francisco Bay, California. When she was ten years old, Linda became fascinated by acting when she performed an instrumental role in her school's Christmas production. She performed in school plays and local community theatre. Linda studied at Saint Francis High School Mountain View California. When she finished her studies, Linda had to choose whether she wanted to move to New York or Los Angeles and study theater. After graduating, she had decide whether or not to pursue film and television in Los Angeles. Linda performed her first big character in Bone Chillers, a 1996 television show. Freaks and Geeks was the character that led to her breakthrough. Lindsay Weir played the academic decathlete in the cult show and was awarded one Emmy Award.

James was later cast as the Countess Natasha Rostova for the television adaptation War & Peace (2016). He also starred as Baby Driver (2017) and in the period television dramas Darkest Hour (2017) and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (18) and The Dig (2021), and musicals Mamma Mia! and Here We Go Again (2018) and Yesterday (2019). The role she played as Pamela Anderson in the biographical series Pam & Tommy (2022) earned her nominations for an Golden Globe and a Primetime Emmy Award.
